Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges faced by lecturers in producing academic books, including textbooks and scholarly publications, within the environment of XXX University. The background of this research stems from the relatively low productivity of lecturers in publishing books, despite its importance as part of the implementation of the tridharma of higher education. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach by distributing questionnaires via Google Form to 46 lecturers as respondents. The collected data were analyzed descriptively to portray lecturers’ perceptions of various factors that hinder the process of writing and publishing books. The findings indicate that the challenges encountered by lecturers can be classified into two main categories: internal factors and external factors. Internal factors include time management difficulties, limited writing skills, and motivational or psychological barriers. External factors consist of limited access to references, insufficient institutional support, inadequate funding, lack of incentives and recognition, publishing process constraints, limited collaboration and networking, administrative regulations, and inadequate technological tools. The most dominant challenges identified were related to time constraints, limited institutional support, and insufficient funding and incentives for book publication. Based on these results, the study recommends that XXX University strengthen its institutional support by increasing funding for book publication and providing clear and proportional incentives for lecturers who successfully publish books. In addition, improving lecturers’ capacity through training in academic writing, time management, and collaborative authorship is essential to enhance scholarly productivity. Through the synergy between institutional support and individual capacity development, lecturers’ productivity in book publication is expected to improve sustainably and contribute to the academic reputation of the university.
